Softball: Rain doesn't hinder OU's determination

After rain reduced last weekend’s Ohio University Tournament to a single game against Western Illinois, Ohio came out with a 4-3 win against the Leathernecks.

“The inclement weather postponement did not hinder us at all. I’m happy the snow removal on the field worked as well as it did,” coach Jodi Hermanek said.

“We had a fresh start today after the weekend.”

Ohio (5-5) started out strong by scoring all four of their runs in the first two innings.  Lauren Gellerman cleared the bases with a three-run double during the first inning, scoring Alexis Joseph, Paige Kemezis, and Emily Wethington.

Kemezis added a fourth run for the Bobcats during the second inning when she hit a sacrifice fly to the right, allowing Brooke Morgart to score.

Ohio held Western Illinois (2-8) scoreless until the sixth inning when the Leathernecks scored two of their three runs. The third run came in the seventh inning.

Wethington continued her strong start to the season on the pitching mound. She pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and tied the school’s all-time record in that category with 425.

“We still have a lot of the season left, so I hope to break (the record),” Wethington said. “Today wasn’t my best day (in other aspects) but I have a great team behind me who were able to help achieve a win.”

Ohio resumes play today with a double-header against Marshall (9-9) at 1 pm and 3 p.m. Marshall is coming off a 17-16 win against Kent State in a four-and-a-half hour game on Sunday.

“Today was great preparation for Marshall,” Hermanek said. “As competitors, its always best to get as much experience as you can.”
