Wind Ensemble performance continues music school 'Movements' theme

The School of Music’s “Movements” theme will continue tomorrow as Ohio University’s Wind Ensemble presents “European Union.”

The name of the ensemble’s concert is constructed from two different principles. “European Union” is a play on words that refers to the collection of countries throughout Europe said Dr. Andrew Trachsel, who will conduct the concert. The ensemble also chose the name because European conductors wrote all the works that group will play.

The ensemble will play five pieces altogether.

During David Beford’s “Sun Paints Rainbows on Vast Waves,” members of the percussion section will utilize wine bottles filled with various amounts of liquid to create a musical effect.

The ensemble will also perform Gustav Holst’s “Second Suite in F,” in celebration of the song’s 100-year anniversary Trachsel said. The group will also perform works from Andriessen, Adam Gorb and Richard Wagner.

“There’s a little bit for everyone,” Trachsel said. “We have a nice variety.”

There is also a 150-year time span across the compositions, Trachsel said.

“European Union” is the second concert that the wind ensemble has hosted this quarter. The first was held Feb. 3.

Although Trachsel will be conducting the bulk of the concert, Graduate Conductor John Lopez will also be leading some of the songs.

•Dr. Matthew Morris will be featured playing the bassoon and will perform a solo during the concert.

The concert will take place in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Many of the music department’s events are held in Templeton. Trachsel stated that the venue is ideal, because it provides ample seating and has good acoustic levels.
