Annual beer tasting helps Empower Campaign

Moms visiting Athens have an excuse to start drinking early and for a good cause tomorrow.

Jackie O’s Pub and Brewery, located at 24 W. Union St., will again host the Moms Weekend Beer Tasting to benefit the Empower Campaign. It costs $15 to participate in the tasting, which includes seven to eight samples and light appetizers. Tastings will take place at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

“We only have 20 tickets left for the 3 p.m. and two for the 5 p.m.,” said Gwennan Richmond, president of the Empower Campaign at Ohio University. “We would sell tickets at the door, but we never have in the past because we have sold out.”

Richmond added that the event has been happening at least once a quarter since 2009 and that it’s a chance for parents of the group’s members to contribute to the cause.

Richmond called the Moms Weekend Beer Tasting one of her favorite events, saying, “We can really reach out and not only get students and faculty involved but also talk to parents and other members of the community.”

The Empower Campaign is a holistic community- and school-based initiative designed to help children, particularly those orphaned or vulnerable, receive an education in Africa.

“(The beer tasting) is great for people who enjoy drinking beer. (Jackie O’s) showcases beers that they brew themselves, so it gives you a chance to experience different types and discover which ones you like best.” said Jonelle Melnichenko, a senior who attended the tasting last year with her mom.

Brad Clark, who has been Jackie O’s brewmaster for five years, said the brewery currently has 13 beers available and produces about 35 kegs a week.

“The beer tasting at Jackie O’s is really great. Its fun to taste and learn about the beers brewed locally at Jackie O’s. It’s a great time for anyone who really enjoys and appreciates different types of beer,” said senior, Kate Haley, who also attended last year’s event with her mom.

Those interested in tickets should contact Gwennan Richmond either by phone at 740-357-1761 or email, gr545806@ohio.edu.
