The Athens Bicycle Club is hosting its 10th annual Athens Spring Ride tomorrow. According to its website, the club was founded in 1971.
The Athens Spring Ride is one of the club’s many accomplishments in large part due to retired Ohio University professor Tom Wolf.
The Athens Spring Ride begins at Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio. Registration and parking for the event are located in front of Robin’s Crossing. The registration lasts from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. tomorrow. “The Budget Ride” costs $3, but participants should bring food, water, cash and tools. Maps and arrows are provided to assist riders in navigating the four to five optional routes described on the club’s website.
The course runs 12 miles along the Hockhocking — Adena Bikeway, involving hilly, tree-dotted terrain. The route options extend to create journeys of 30 to 100 miles.
Peter Kotses, an Athens Bicycle Club member who owns and manages Athens Bicycle on West Stimson Avenue, has participated in the Athens Spring Ride before.
“(The routes) are well thought out,” Kotses said. “… They have some climbs in them.”
He also added that the $3 price is a benefit of the tour.
John Lefelhocz, owner and operator of Cycle Path Bicycles on West Union Street, has also participated in the Athens Spring Ride,
“The course starts easy and flat and is nice for people getting back into the season,” he said. “Then if they feel up to it, they can keep adding on the mileage.”
Lefelhocz estimated about 50 people participated in the event last year.
“The larger routes are hillier, but (the course) is great for all levels,” he said.
