The Coffee Cup restaurant in Nelsonville was destroyed by fire early this morning — causing about $220,000 worth of damage.
Last night at 1:17 a.m., the Nelsonville Division of Fire was alerted to flames shooting out of the back of the Coffee Cup, 615 W. Washington St., in Nelsonville, according to the Athens PIO Network.
Nelsonville Police officers spotted the flames and heavy smoke coming from the building on their regular rounds of the city, according to the network.
U.S. Route 33 was shut down until 4:16 a.m. when Nelsonville and York Township firefighters extinguished the flames, according to the network.
The building was heavily damaged and firefighters are estimating the cost to be about $220,000, according to the network.
A Nelsonville Division of Fire official said the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
