Committee selects finalists for student trustee position

An Ohio University committee has named five students as finalists for the student trustee position.

The committee selected juniors Zach George, Victoria Calderon, Tiffany Schlein, Allison Arnold and sophomore Allie Dyer from a pool of 13 applicants. Gov. John Kasich now will review the five applications and interview the finalists before announcing who will serve two years as the new student trustee at OU’s Leadership Awards Gala May 18.

George, a finance and accounting major from Lebanon, Ohio, is the only applicant lobbying for the position for a second time.

“As a member of the Board of Trustees, I will work toward addressing specific concerns including budget cuts and rising tuition costs,” George wrote in his application. “We need to make sure that cuts do not come with negative consequences for our student population; however, we must also realize that tough decisions lie ahead.”

Dyer, an Honors Tutorial College student studying political science and a resident of Kettering, emphasized her eclectic university experience.

“As a representative of students and their interests, a student trustee must be receptive to other students and well informed of their concerns,” states Dyer in her application. “Because I am involved with widely divergent groups … I have exposure to a wide cross-section of Ohio University students.”

Schlein, a global studies and Spanish major also from Lebanon, said her strongest attribute was “compassion.”

“It is important for a leader to care, above all else, about the welfare of those being lead,” she states in her application. “… I have spent this year making a group of unheard voices audible in the student government.”

Calderon, who is from the Toledo area, is studying journalism and chemistry. She wrote in her application that the trustee should be approachable.

“I also believe the trustee must be approachable, informed, and willing to speak about the work they do in their position to their constituents at Ohio University,” states Calderon.

Arnold, of Cincinnati, is studying public relations and said collaboration is key.

“No leader can be successful unless those they lead are happy and taken care of, and I’ve always worked to build strong relationships and friendships with those I’m representing,” she states in her application.

The newly elected trustee will take the seat of outgoing trustee Kyle Triplett, whose tenure began in 2009. He or she will serve alongside Danielle Parker, who was named student trustee last year.
