The Athens County prosecutor announced yesterday he will resign from his position next month — leaving the office with more than a year remaining in his term.
Athens County Prosecutor C. David Warren sent out a letter of resignation yesterday stating he will resign effective May 31, as he has decided to retire from the job.
Warren cited budgetary and personal concerns as reasons for his resignation. His term would have been complete at the end of next year.
“It’s time to leave,” he added.
Warren has served as county prosecutor since 2001. Prior to 2001, he served as Magistrate of the Athens County Juvenile Court.
In the time between May 31 and elections, the Athens County Commissioner Central Committee will appoint an interim prosecutor, Warren said.
“(Athens County Assistant Prosecutor Keller Blackburn) has shown interest in the position,” Warren said.
Blackburn has served as the assistant prosecutor for four years and announced Feb. 2 he will run for prosecutor in the next election.
On Jan. 27, Warren announced he would not be running for re-election.
“I appreciate the opportunity that the people of Athens have given me,” Warren said. “This is the best job in the world, but it’s time to do something else.”
