County prosecutor announces resignation

Athens County Prosecutor C. David Warren announced today he will resign from his position.

Warren sent out a letter of resignation that said he is resigning because he has decided to retire. The resignation goes into effect May 31.

Budget issues and personal reasons are part of the reason Warren said he chose May 31 to resign.

“It’s time to leave,” he added.

Warren has been county prosecutor since 2001. Prior to 2001, he served as Magistrate of the Athens County Juvenile Court.

The election for county prosecutor takes place in 2012. In the meantime, the County Commissioner Central Committee will appoint an interim prosecutor, Warren said.

“(Athens County Assistant Prosecutor Keller Blackburn) has shown interest in the position,” Warren said.

Blackburn has been the assistant prosecutor for four years and announced Feb. 2 that he will run for prosecutor in the next election.

On Jan. 27, Warren announced he would not be running for reelection.

“I appreciate the opportunity that the people of Athens have given me,” Warren said. “This is the best job in the world, but it’s time to do something else.”
