A discarded cigarette at University Commons led to a large fire Friday afternoon.
Athens Fire Department responded to the apartment complex, 15 S. Shafer St., Friday at 2:27 p.m, according to a release from the department. The approximately 6-foot-by-6-foot flame that struck building 6 of the complex was caused by a discarded cigarette left between the siding and stairwell.
"We got it put out early. It could have been serious had it run longer," Athens Fire Capt. Ken Gilbraith said.
Damage estimates are not yet known, and an employee at the apartment complex declined to comment.
