Gala to attract clarinet experts

Ohio University’s School of Music will host its ninth Clarinet Gala tomorrow at 2 p.m.

The Clarinet Gala is the brainchild of Rebecca Rischin, OU’s associate professor of clarinet. Rischin created the concept in 2002, and the concert is held every April.

Rischin usually enhances the gala by inviting guest musicians to teach workshops and perform.

This year, the special guest artist will be Scott Wright, an associate professor of clarinet at the University of Kentucky-Lexington. Wright will be joined by Linda Halloin.

Rischin said Wright was chosen to perform because the two are former colleagues.

The concert also will feature musicians from Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin, Rischin said.

Although tomorrow will culminate with the concert, the gala will consist of three other events. At 9 a.m., Wright will teach some of the School of Music’s advanced members, giving the students criticism and advice.

At 12:45 p.m., there will be a play-along, which will allow amateurs and veterans to play alongside the OU Clarinet Choir.

“Clarinet Gala is a very important recruiting event for the school,” Rischin said.

Rischin said the event is geared toward both high school students and college students.

“The high school master class features students who have been admitted to Ohio University for fall 2011 but who might not yet have decided where to go to school,” she said.

All the events will take place in Glidden Hall.
