Local act throws Thursday series

Tonight, Jackie O’s Pub and Brewery will continue its series of Thursday’s with Joey Hebdo.

Hebdo is a singer-songwriter and a Columbus native. Throughout the month of April, Hebdo will bring in friends from Athens and throughout Ohio to join him on stage.

No stranger to the Athens music scene, Hebdo has befriended many talented performers in his experiences. He hopes to further tie himself to the bands that he has become acquainted.

“This is a great way to build community,” Hebdo said. “The Athens music scene is great; the people involved are super strong and super supportive.”

With multiple tours through New York City and an appearance in March’s South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, Hebdo is quite accomplished himself.

A commuter between the Athens and Columbus music scenes, Hebdo has made his name pertinent all throughout Ohio. Recently, Hebdo recorded Prosciutto, his first full-length album, at 3 Elliot Studios in Athens.

While he is the “unofficial official” host of the event, Hebdo will alternate sets with himself and two to three other bands per evening.

“It’s just a way to pair myself, a local act, with acts of a different nature,” said Hebdo.

This week’s guest will be Smokestack and the Foothill Fury, a one man traveling bluegrass band. The event will be free and open to all ages.

Originally a trial run of a quarterlong event, Hebdo’s success on night one has sparked plans for a full run-through next Fall Quarter. Hebdo hopes to include members of local bands such as Duke Jr. and the Smokey Boots, the Corbin Marsh Band and Southeast Engine in upcoming installments.

Hebdo hopes to add his own touch to the shows themselves by incorporating his ideas throughout the venue.

“One idea I had is to put a merchandise table out for whoever wants to put their merchandise there, playing or not,” Hebdo said.

Next week will include guest Paranormals, featuring Junebug and Catfish, themselves staples of the Athens music scene. The week after will include the Andy Shaw Band, a reggae-pop band from Columbus.

“Come out and gather in the name of music,” said Hebdo.
