Wesley Lowery

Lowery named Post's editor-in-chief

The Post publishing board has selected junior Wesley Lowery as the next editor-in-chief of the newspaper.

Lowery began working at the paper in late 2008, and his experience includes internships at The Detroit News and The Columbus Dispatch. Lowery, of Shaker Heights, is a staff writer and served as campus editor last year. He was chosen over Culture Editor Adam Wagner and City Editor Alex Stuckey.

Outgoing Post editor-in-chief Joe Ragazzo said he was satisfied with the decision.

“I’m very comfortable with Wes taking over. He has a vision and an understanding for being editor-in-chief,” Ragazzo said. “You’re not only responsible for the year you’re responsible for but for making sure the future of The Post is safe.”

Ragazzo said Lowery’s extensive experience was a key factor in his selection. In addition to his previous experience, Lowery will be interning at The Wall Street Journal in New York City this summer.

“I doubt there’s anybody on this campus that’s going to have that experience,” Ragazzo said. “He’s a great journalist, and the experience he has speaks for itself.”

Lowery said he was “excited” about the appointment.

“I’ve put a lot of effort into this paper.” Lowery said. “Joe (Ragazzo)’s been really good, and it’s going to be a privilege to hopefully improve upon.”

Next year’s challenges will include competing against numerous other, newer publications around campus and Athens, Lowery said

“I’m going to continue to … ensure The Post is the preeminent publication,” Lowery said. “We are the best outlet here, the awards on our wall prove that. We’re going to continue to serve the students and Athens.”

Lowery will select the remaining editors at the newspaper throughout the course of this year. The paper, which distributes 14,000 papers throughout Athens County, has stiff competition it must match, he said.

“We’re going to continue to be the only outlet providing in-depth reporting, the most enterprising investigative stories, the most thorough sports coverage,” Lowery said. “We’re going to continue to be the only independent voice for students.”
