Sinkhole opens in Convo parking lot

A parking lot near The Convo has a new landmark.

A sinkhole has opened on the southern end of Lot No. 127, southwest of The Convo. The hole, which has been cordoned off by the university, is several yards in diameter.

“It has something to do with a drain underneath the lot … which may have collapsed,” said Marty Paulins, director of Transportation and Parking Services.

In the meantime, only the immediate area around the hole has been closed, and the lot will be closed to traffic this weekend to accommodate events, according to a release from the university.

“Facilities is in the process of determining the exact cause of the problem and potential solutions. There are no cost estimates at this time,” said Katie Quaranta, a university spokeswoman, in an email.

Mike Gebeke, executive director of Facilities Management, was unavailable for comment.
