'Strawberry Day' tempts students with free treats

Scores of students lined up yesterday as University Program Council’s final themed-food day of the year came to fruition.

Strawberry Day brought hundreds of Ohio University students to Baker University Center for sweet strawberry-themed treats. The event motivated students to form a line that stretched along Baker Center’s second floor, prompting UPC to start serving early to prevent traffic flow disruption.

“Isn’t it funny what students like?” said senior Mandy Hohler, UPC’s special events executive co-chair.

Hohler was the architect of Apple Day Oct. 12 as well as Banana Day Jan. 25. The events offered snacks and treats that incorporated the fruit of the day. For Strawberry Day, students indulged in Strawberry Spritzer, mini strawberry shortcakes with cream and strawberries dipped in various kinds of chocolate.

Hohler said she did not know how many hundreds of strawberries were used in making the sweet treats, but that UPC had prepared servings for up to 500 people.

“I think people really like the idea of free food,” Hohler said, “And I mean, who doesn’t want to go to Strawberry Day?”

Hohler, who is graduating at the end of the quarter, said she hopes UPC continues the event after she is gone. She noted turnout for each of the fruit days has been very high.

“It’s awesome. I love strawberries,” said Taylor Buhring, a senior studying computer science. “They’re better than bananas.”

UPC puts on a variety of events for OU students throughout the year and is made up of a volunteer board of students, according to its website.

UPC is funded through the Student Activities Commission (SAC) and has taken a funding cut from $98,000 last academic year to $73,333 this year.
