Students will have a chance to take a bite out of Athens tonight when the University Program Council kicks off its quarterly local food party.
The organization will pair with the Black Student Cultural Programming Board to put on the “Bite of Nite” at 5 p.m. in Howard Park.
“Bite of Nite” will be similar to fall quarter’s “Slice of Athens” and winter quarter’s “Cup of Court” events. This iteration will feature local restaurants and food places open later in the evening.
“It’s good for both the community and students,” said UPC Film and Cultural Arts Executive Cameron Scheetz, who is in charge of planning the event.
Howard Park is the area next to Voigt Hall and across the street from Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.
The free event will feature representatives from various Athens food vendors. Some will have free food to pass out and others will have coupons and other promotional items, Scheetz said. A DJ will also be provided for the event by BSCPB, and sound equipment will come from the university, Scheetz said.
“It’s kind of free for everybody,” Scheetz said, adding that students will get free food while the local businesses will get a chance to promote themselves at the event.
The event will have “a slight tech cost” to UPC because of table and sound equipment rented from the university, Scheetz said. He could not provide specific costs, adding they would come from UPC’s budget.
A list of businesses has not been finalized and organizers will not know for sure who is coming until today, but UPC Film and Culture co-chair Sam Fink added that DP Dough will be present, along with three or four others.
“The plan of the event was just to engage the students with the Athens businesses,” Fink said. “I hope everybody can come to the event.”
If poor weather prevents the event from being held, it will be rescheduled for another date, Fink said.
