A Buick Rendezvous plowed into an apartment building after the driver lost control of his vehicle at about noon today.
Witnesses said the vehicle came careening through the parking lot of Graceland Apartments on South Shafer Street at about 35 miles per hour, and became lodged in an apartment building at the end of the lot.
In the impact a laundry facility was destroyed and two apartments were damaged, although Athens Fire Chief Bob Troxel said he did not have an estimate for the damage.
The driver of the SUV was taken to the hospital and Troxel said there were no other injuries.
Although Troxel said he could not comment on the condition of the driver, the driver was seen moving on the stretcher.
Fire and police officials were unable to identify the driver of the vehicle.
Lynne Last, manager of the complex, said that she was beginning the process of securing the building so that the tenants could return to their apartments as soon as possible.
Ben Guenther, a graduate student studying film production, lives on the first floor of the building that was damaged, but was in his on-campus office when the crash occurred.
Guenther’s room was damaged in the crash.
“I got a text from my landlord saying ‘Crash at your apartment,’” Guenther said. “I’m amazed no one was hurt.”
