Women's Golf: Bobcats gear up for final test before MAC Tournament

One year after a third-place finish at The Falcon Invitational, the Bobcats return to a golf course that yielded some of their best results.

Ohio will travel to Bowling Green, Ohio to take on the field in this year’s Falcon Invitational, the final event before the Mid-American Conference Tournament.

“I think we are doing a lot of things right, right now,” coach Kelly Ovington said. “As long as everybody gives 100 percent and really goes after their individual goals, as a team we should be able to reach our team goal.”

The 7,064-yard course at the Stone Ridge Golf Club will once again be the site of the tournament, and the Bobcats look to duplicate last year’s success.

Ohio shot a team score of 651 (+75) last year. Megan Weaver led the way for the Bobcats individually. Her 14-over-par 158 was tops on the team and good enough to tie her for seventh in the event.

“I think mentally we are a lot stronger than we have been in the past,” Ovington said. “I think they feel confident that they can handle the conditions that are going to be put in front of them.

“Golf is a game of confidence. The fact that they know they can score these numbers, and consistently, is becoming more of a truth for them.”

The field Ohio will be facing includes four other MAC schools: Western Michigan, Akron, Northern Illinois and host Bowling Green. The competition will give the Bobcats a preview of the MAC Tournament, which takes place in a week.

“It will be nice to go up against them,” Ovington said. “They are all really looking forward to MACs next week.”

Experience also might play a key role in this weekend’s event as four of Ohio’s five golfers that placed in last year’s invitational are there again.

“We were discussing (experience) in practice last night,” Ovington said. “It always shows on a golf course and it’s always nice to have a senior member on the squad.”

First round action will begin Saturday, and the tournament will conclude Sunday afternoon.
