Armed burglars get nothing

An aggravated burglary on West State Street yesterday resulted in nothing taken and no injuries, according to an Athens Police press release.

At about 3:20 p.m., two male suspects — one armed with a pistol — demanded “the nice stuff” from two college-age residents, one male and one female.

Even though one of the residents fled and dialed 911 from a neighbor’s home, the suspects, who were described as black, fled the scene after giving short chase, according to the release.

“Initially, they tried to catch him … once he was out of arm’s reach, (the suspects) knew the jib was up,” said Lt. Randy Gray of Athens Police, adding that he received statements from both victims who are “fine.”

One suspect is described as 5-foot-11 with a thin, muscular build and was last seen wearing jean shorts, a darkly colored shirt and black baseball cap. The other, reportedly weighing more than 200 pounds, was wearing long jean shorts and a blue striped shirt.

Though about five officers were on the scene, Lt. Gray said there are currently no leads.

“This isn’t related to anything that I know of,” Gray said. “Hopefully somebody saw something.”
