Athens man arrested and charged with strong armed robbery

An Athens man was arrested and charged with strong armed robbery after punching a Dollar General clerk.

Raymond Luty, 50, was arrested Friday at about 8 p.m., after punching a clerk at Dollar General, 1016 E. State St., during a shoplifting attempt, according to an Athens Police report.

Luty caused minor injury to the clerk's face before fleeing the scene, but she did not need medical attention, according to the report.

Athens Police officers responded to the incident and began searching for Luty near Knight's Inn, 997 E. State St., where they found him hiding in the crawl space of the rear building, according to the report.

He was arrested and charged with strong armed robbery, a second-degree felony, according to the report.

Luty was sent to Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail and is being held on a $25,000 bond.

If convicted, Luty could spend up to eight years in jail and pay up to $15,000, according to the Ohio Revise Code.
