Brough House residents awakened by flooding

One Ohio University dorm awoke early this morning to an unpleasant surprise as someone caused a flood in a third-floor bathroom.

OU custodial staff came around 5 a.m. to clean up the mess and set up fans in the hallways to dry the carpets once all the water had been sucked up.

“The water came into my room, and I noticed it around 5 a.m.,” said third floor resident Shawn Allen, who lives two doors down from the bathroom. “Nothing in my room was damaged, but two of my towels are now soaked with water.”

The most damage done was to the first and second floor people, he added.

First floor resident Kyle Scurlock said he was awakened this morning by maintenance cleaning the hallway outside of his room.

“Nothing was damaged in my room – my shoes just got wet, and my carpet soaked up a lot of the water,” he said. “The thing was the most irritating was that the maintenance people keep knocking on the doors to make sure that everyone was aware of the situation. I just wanted to go back to sleep.”

Scurlock also said he is worried about the billing for the building, saying that the OUPD will most likely not catch whoever did the damage.

“I don’t want to pay for the damages that someone else did,” he said. “But how are we supposed to figure it out? No one is going to confess.”

OUPD Chief Andrew Powers said the incident is currently under investigation by the OUPD.
