Exhibition to reveal, auction art

Many say children ask questions that wise men are unable to answer. That innocence is celebrated today in McCracken Hall, where the artworks of more than 30 third-graders from Crooksville Elementary will be unveiled.

The exhibition and auction are part of the annual Art Extravaganza, started by Dr. Renée A. Middleton, dean of The Patton College of Education and Human Services.

Middleton said her visits to local schools inspired her to hold the annual event.

“We’re seeking to foster a connection with area schools,” she said. “The Art Extravaganza lets students participate in an event that features an audience of all ages and from all local communities.”

Nicole Bersani, public affairs assistant for Patton College, said the event is hoped to draw a crowd.

“Last year’s event was bigger than it had been in the past,” she said. “The bar is set high.”

Last year, the Art Extravaganza raised $1,500 for the art program and contributing students, surpassing all previous events.

Promoting students’ interests is mutually beneficial, Middleton said.

“Anything we can do, every tool we can use to keep young people engaged and learning is a benefit for everybody,” she said.

Middleton added that although she buys at least one painting each year, her purchase is not the highlight of the event for her.

“My favorite thing about the process is to see the smiles on the young people’s faces and their parents when they see people admiring their work and ultimately bidding on their work,” she said. “It’s this sense of pride.”

Middleton said an important aspect of education is emphasizing personal strengths.

“It’s amazing what these children can produce,” she said. “We have some fantastic art teachers out there.”

The featured pieces will hang in McCracken Hall until November, when they will be auctioned off at the Kennedy Museum of Art. Proceeds will benefit Crooksville’s art program and the respective artists.
