Female, 19, hits tree, taken by med-flight to Huntington hospital

A 19-year-old female was taken to the hospital by Med-flight this evening after crashing into a tree near Amesville.

Teri L. Burcher, of Amesville, was driving a 2002 Ford Focus east on County Road 99, about 6 miles Northwest of Amesville. Burcher failed to maintain control of her car and slid off the right side of the roadway, striking a tree at about 6 p.m., according to a news release from the Athens Post of the Ohio Highway Patrol.

The female was taken by Med-flight to Cabell-Huntington Hospital in Huntington, W.Va., for treatment, said Highway Patrol Trooper Christopher Davis. It was determined she probably had a broken left arm and broken left leg, Davis said.

“She was trapped in the car for 30 to 45 minutes,” he said, adding that the local fire department had to use the Jaws of Life to remove her from the car.

When police and firefighters arrived, Burcher was unconscious, but regained consciousness once medical personnel arrived, Davis said.

Burcher is listed as an Ohio University faculty and staff member on the OU Directory.

Her facebook lists her as an employee of the OU Bromley Dining Hall from April 2007 to January 2008.

Burcher was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and the reason she lost control remains unclear, Davis said.

“It was a gravel road but nothing not passable,” he said.

There were no other car around at the time of the crash and it is unclear how fast she was driving, Davis said.

The roadway was closed for about 90 minutes, according to the release.
