Graduate Student Senate: Kelly snags 3rd presidential term, PROUD party secures top positions

PROUD’s Tracy Kelly defeated hOUr’s John Calhoun in the Graduate Student Senate elections yesterday and will serve her third term as senate president.

“I am really happy. I really look forward to serving again,” Kelly said.

Kelly gained 204 votes to defeat Calhoun’s 162 votes in the first contested race for president since 2004.

“I’m just glad so many graduate students came out to vote,” Calhoun said.

This year, 378 graduate, professional and medical students voted in the election — a 122 percent increase from last year when 170 students voted, according to the election results.

Molly Yanity will also serve another term as vice president for communication after receiving 210 votes compared to Michael Dickard’s 141.

“We are very excited to keep moving forward. I have been with Tracy (in Graduate Student Senate) for the past year and a half, and she is doing such a great job. I am so happy,” Yanity said.

Jeffery Barbee’s 186 votes defeated Erin Dame’s 162 for vice president for administration and finance, and Isaac Abram earned 200 votes to beat out Thomas Raabe’s 150 votes for vice president for committees and legislative affairs.

Steven Foy, hOUr’s only win, defeated Dane Johnston by 10 votes for senator of the Patton College of Education and Human Services. Brendan Moore, who defeated Matthew Sowards to become senator for the College of Arts and Sciences, won the only other contested race.

Three senators won after running unopposed: Christine Pirot for the Center for International Studies; Ashley Furrow for the Scripps College of Communication; and Rebecca Sherwood for the College of Fine Arts.

“We had really positive energy since we won a contested election, so we have a lot of momentum, and so we are going to start off right away,” Kelly said.
