Inmate reaches plea deal

A Logan man pleaded guilty to possession of heroin after he was found with 158 balloons of heroin in jail.

Sean R. Vanness, 27, was serving time in Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail for drug possession when he was discovered with 158 balloons of heroin March 8.

Vanness was charged with possession of heroin, a second-degree felony. He was indicted on the charge in the Athens County Court of Common Pleas March 14.

He took a plea agreement with the Athens County Prosecutor’s Office yesterday. As part of the agreement, Vanness pleaded guilty to possession of heroin and was sentenced to five years in prison and fined $750, said Assistant Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn.

However, the fine was waived since Vanness is incarcerated, Blackburn said.

If convicted at a trial, Vanness could have been sentenced to up to eight years in prison and fined up to $15,000, according to the Ohio Revised Code.
