'Post' business manager submits petition to run for Council 3rd Ward seat

Michele Papai will now have an opponent this November in the race for the Athens City Council 3rd Ward seat.

The petition deadline for independent candidates wishing to run in the November elections was 4 p.m. Monday, but only RJ Sumney submitted a petition. Sumney, who will run for council’s 3rd Ward seat, is also the business manager for The Post.

Sumney, a long-time resident of Athens, said he decided to run for the 3rd Ward seat to remain active in the community.

“I would like to expand on my contributions to the community, and City Council seems like the best way,” Sumney said.

The Athens County Board of Elections will not officially certify the petition until July 15.
