Post Letter: Ohio's economy needs livestock board

In regards to Mr. Christopher Myers’ scathing letter about the Ohio Livestock Care and Standards Board that was published in Monday’s issue of The Post, he only further proves the ignorance of animal rights activists and opponents of 2009’s Issue 2.

What Mr. Myers failed either to mention or bother to research was the intent of Issue 2.  Issue 2 was designed to prevent animal rights groups such as PETA, The Humane Society of the United States and the ASPCA from taking one of our inherent rights of choosing what we eat.

I respect the choice of those who choose to eat a vegetarian or vegan diet. I expect them to respect my choice to eat meat and use animal products. Animal rights groups have already dramatically changed laws in California. The changes are negatively effecting the state’s economy.

Why?

Because laws passed similar to what HSUS and PETA want to pass in Ohio have forced thousands, if not millions, of Californian livestock farmers out of California.

Another thing that Mr. Myers ignores is the impact that livestock farming has had on Ohio. Cincinnati was called Porkopolis during its early history.  Ohio also ranks in or near the top 10 in almost every type of meat or animal products produced.

So Mr. Myers, as an Ohioan, I ask that before you start deciding which legal actions are economically “worthless” (which I assure you the Livestock Care and Standards Board is anything but worthless), do some legitimate research.

If anything should be cut at the state level, it is Kasich’s cabinet’s pay.
