Whether it’s a last minute study session or a wild night at Palmerfest, all-nighters are not unfamiliar to the average OU student. But tonight, a 24-hour relay against cancer might be a more worthy cause.
The American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life event, which started in 1985, is a nationwide walk, jog or run to “fight back against cancer,” the event’s website says. The relay teams raise money through sponsorship and donations, which are put toward finding a cure for the cancer.
“So far we’ve raised about $34,000 of our $65,000 goal,” Krista Meyer, a senior and second year organizer of the event, said. “Things have been going really well this year. We’re further along financially this year than last year.”
This year, there are 876 participants on 55 teams, but Meyer said it is not too late to join an existing team or even start a new one. Those who are interested can register online at relayforlife.org/OU, Meyer added.
Attendees can look forward to free food and drinks, live bands, DJs and contests such as the Miss Relay boy’s pageant, where men can wear pageant attire and participate in Q&A.
Planning for this year’s relay began in September 2010, and Meyer is hopeful that the weather won’t interfere.
“If the weather’s too bad, we can’t do the relay,” Meyer said. “If it’s off, it’s off. Too much planning went into it to reschedule.”
The relay is free to attend and lasts from 6 p.m. until mid-day tomorrow at Pruitt Field.
