Setting the Stage: Folky Mize plays Saturday

Cheyenne Marie Mize is no stranger to the festival circuit.  At this March’s South by Southwest festival in Austin, Mize was recognized as one of NPR’s Best Discoveries.

A folk-oriented singer-songwriter, Mize has played with folk singer Bonnie “Prince” Billy and recorded with Daytrotter.com.  She will take the stage Saturday at the Nelsonville Music Festival twice: at 2 p.m. on the main stage just before Southeast Engine’s performance and at 5 p.m. in the No-Fi Cabin, reserved for acoustic performances.

Mize said she is almost as excited to see some of the musicians as she is to be a part of the festival.

“I’m really excited to see George Jones on Friday night for sure,” Mize said.  “I grew up in the country, in southern Kentucky, so George Jones and other country artists are what I grew up with.”

The Nelsonville Music Festival is not only a place for fans to see some of their

favorite musicians, but a place for musicians to see each other as well.

“It’s really exciting,” Mize said.  “It’s the biggest festival I’ve been able to play my

solo act.  It’s just great to share the stage with so many amazing artists, ones that I’ve looked up to for a long time and some friends as well.”

Mize also plans on taking the stage with friend and fellow performer Doug Paisley.  Paisley is a Canadian singer-songwriter who has also performed with Bonnie “Prince” Billy.  Paisley has been featured in such publications as Rolling Stone, The New Yorker and Pitchfork.com.

“I am also going to be playing violin with Doug Paisley, hopefully,” Mize said.  “I cut my finger last week and am still working on training my other fingers to play, but I think I will be able to play — and that will be a lot of fun.”

Mize is an accomplished musician on the rise, and recognition for her solo album has already gained her a considerable amount of respect in the folk community.

“I’m just excited to be there and experience the festival,” said Mize.  “I hadn’t heard of it before this year and am really excited to be a part of it.”
