Summer scheduling problem fixed after two-day delay

Because of troubles implementing Ohio University’s new class scheduling system, students wanting to register for summer classes had to wait an extra few days.

The Office of Information Technology informed students in a Wednesday email that registration was delayed until Thursday morning. However, the department sent several other e-mails on Wednesday and Friday last week indicating that registration would be postponed further.

The delay was caused by a new registration system that wasn’t quite ready to go live, said Sean O’Malley, Information Technology Communications Manager.

“It’s a good thing we did that,” O’Malley said. “The team found a problem on Tuesday that if we had turned registration on Wednesday, that problem unfixed would’ve crashed everything.”

Students were able to begin registering for summer classes Saturday at 7 a.m., and the new system will be ready to go when Fall Quarter priority registration begins May 16.

“We’re confident that all of our final testing is done,” O’Malley said.

The new system is comparable to Amazon.com, where students put their desired classes into a “cart” and submit a selected scheduled, he said, adding that the technology department does not have any plans to update the new system in the near future.
