Voter turnout eclipses last year's total

Although voter turnout has decreased drastically in the second day of Student Senate elections, the total number has exceed the number of votes cast last year.

A little less than 1,000 students have voted today for Student Senate elections, a major decrease from yesterday’s turnout

The total number of voters rose to 4,057 before the polls closed at 7 p.m. today, according to a tweet from Dean of Students Ryan Lombardi. Yesterday, 3,117 students had voted before the polls close at 7p.m.

The total number of voters has also surpassed numbers from 2009 and 2008, neither of which broke 3,000 total voters.

The lower turnout today is probably not due to a short system malfunction this afternoon, said Board of Elections Chairman Chauncey Jackson.

The voting system was offline for no more than 33 minutes between 12:35 and 1:08 p.m. before OIT fixed the server error, he said.

“I really don’t think it was an issue,” he said.

The polls remain open until 7 p.m. tonight and the winners will be announced at 8 p.m. on the first floor of Baker University Center.
