Kevin Giles, Charged with trafficking cocaine

Columbus man pleads guilty to drug trafficking

After being arrested for selling cocaine in May, a Columbus man took a plea agreement this past Thursday, cutting his potential jail sentence in half.

Kevin Giles, 24, was charged with trafficking in cocaine, a second-degree felony, after he sold or attempted to sell 21 grams of cocaine in the Nelsonville McDonald’s parking lot in the vicinity of a juvenile Feb. 2, according to court documents.

Giles pleaded guilty to a third-degree felony charge of trafficking in cocaine as part of the agreement. He could be sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000, none of which is mandatory, according to the plea agreement.

Giles’ suggested sentence is four years in prison. He will be able to apply for judicial release after 10 months and will have to pay $10,000 of restitution to Athens County, according to the agreement.

Giles is due back in court to be sentenced July 18 at 9 a.m.

If convicted at trial, Giles could have been sentenced to a total of eight years in prison and a $15,000 fine, according to the Ohio Revised Code.

Rannie Brown II, 24, of Westerville, was arrested with Giles for the same charge. Brown’s case is still pending, and he is due back in court for a preliminary hearing June 16 at 9:30 a.m.
