OU announces interim dean to represent Scripps College

Ohio University has named an interim dean for the Scripps College of Communication.

Scott Titsworth, who is currently the director of the School of Communication Studies, will serve as interim dean to replace outgoing Dean Greg Shepherd, who is leaving OU for the University of Miami.

Titsworth beat out Claudia Hale, a professor in the School of Communication Studies, and Eric Rothenbuhler, associate dean of the Scripps College, for the position. Titsworth indicated in a previous interview he was not interested in becoming dean.

“I was impressed with Scott’s knowledge of the quality and contributions of each unit in the college and his belief in the importance of continuing to build collaborations across the schools,” said Pam Benoit, executive vice president and provost, in an email to Scripps staff. “Scott’s extensive work in Faculty Senate and his service on university-wide committees also have allowed him to develop an understanding of institutional issues and an appreciation of the accomplishments of other colleges and academic units.”

An 11-member search committee of faculty, administrators and students has been formed to search for Shepherd’s permanent replacement, according to Benoit’s email.

“(Titsworth will serve) until a new permanent dean is found,” said Ann Fidler, Benoit’s chief of staff.

Shepherd’s last day is June 30. Titsworth will assume office immediately after his departure, Fidler said.

OU will conduct a national search for a new dean, she said.

“There will probably be one meeting before everyone breaks up for the summer, and they will probably resume the search in the fall,” Fidler said.

Shepherd is one of 163 OU employees who have taken a buyout option from the university. He will take $80,000 with him when he leaves.

Shepherd is also one of 14 top administrators who announced their departures this year. Among the other departures are a vice president, three assistant vice presidents, an executive dean, four other deans and four directors.

Titsworth and Shepherd could not be reached for comment.
