OU student turns self in for Brough House arson

An Ohio University student was charged with aggravated arson today.

Sophmore Nathan Cencula, 20, turned himself in this afternoon to the Ohio University Police Department in connection with yesterday's early-morning fire at Brough House, according to an OUPD news release.

Cencula was charged with aggravated arson, a first-degree felony, and was processed and transported to the Southeast Ohio Regional Jail in Nelsonville. He will be held on a $10,000 bond, according to the release.

Cencula has been scheduled to appear in court at 9:30 a.m. Monday, according to the release.

The Athens Fire Department, OUPD and the Athens County Emergency Medical Service responded to a call reporting smoke at Brough House at about 2 a.m. yesterday. The fire began in Room 006, a first-floor common room. It was contained to that room and no one was injured.

OUPD and the Ohio Division of State Fire Marshal determined yesterday the fire was caused by arson.

"...there was specific information that did indicate the fire was not accidental, and we were able to lead to criminal causes,” said Shane Cartmill, public information officer for the Division of State Fire Marshal, yesterday.

Officials at OUPD and the fire marshal's office could not be reached for comment.
