Plains woman pleads not guilty to aggravated murder, endangering children

A woman indicted in the murder of her stepdaughter entered a plea of not guilty to aggravated murder and endangering children today.

Ashley J. Young, 25, of The Plains, pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder, a special felony and endangering children, a second-degree felony, today, according to a news release from Athens County Prosecutor Keller Blackburn. 

On May 23, Young allegedly purposely caused the death of Kaylen Young, her 4-year-old step daughter, by physical assault, according to the release. 

Her stepdaughter died May 25 at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, according to the release.

If convicted of endangering children, Young could spend up to eight years in prison and pay up to $15,000, according to the Ohio Revised Code.

If convicted of aggravated murder, Young could be sentenced to life in prison, life in prison without parole or death, according to the code.

She is currently being held in Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail on a $1 million bond.
