Plans finalized for Mill Street sewer renovations

Details for the construction project to replace aging sewer lines under Mill Street this summer have been finalized, including more than a month of road closures.

??The project will close Mill Street between McKinely Avenue and Kurtz Street while construction crews replace the 10-inch and 15-inch sewer lines that run underneath it, according to a Department of Engineering and Public Works news release.

??Construction is scheduled to begin June 20 and continue until late August, according to the release.??

The street will be closed to through traffic in six sections, one block at a time, said Director of Engineering and Public Works Andy Stone in March.??The renovations, expected to cost between $400,000 and $500,000, are funded by income taxes and sewer fees as well as $150,000 from an Ohio grant, said Stone.

Because replacing the sewer lines requires digging a sizable trench in the street, the entire surface will be repaved after the renovations are complete, said Stone.??

The city knew Mill Street would require re-pavement and paired the sewer replacement with paving to maximize the efficiency of the project's funding, Stone said.??

The City of Athens secured Shelly and Sands, Incorporated to complete the project, according to the release.
