Hayes Carll to play in Nelsonville for annual Brick Festival

Native texan and critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Hayes Carll graces the Stuart’s Opera House stage tonight.

Carll’s music has been described as a mix between country, rock n roll, and a bit of old-fashioned songwriting. Brian Koscho, marketing and promotions coordinator for Stuart’s Opera House, said that Carll’s music can be described as funny, but with substance and craft.

“They are smart, well-written songs that take from a lot of genres of music. Hayes Carll definitely falls in the vein of people like Guy Clark, Waylon Jennings, and Ray Wylie Hubbard,” Koscho

said.

Songs will be featured from KMAG YOYO (Kiss My Ass Guys You're On Your Own), Carll’s most successful debut. It started out at #63 on the Billboard 200 chart and sold 10,500 units in its first week. Other works to his name include critically praised 2008 release, Trouble In Mind.

Producer Brad Jones worked with Carll on both albums, but Koscho said that KMAG YOYO captures sound like a live band that has been touring for years. It was important to Carll to spend some time on the road and then convey that feeling into the new album.

“I wanted to challenge myself musically and see if I could capture that live dynamic,” Carll said. “A lot of the songs came with the music first, with the music calling the lyrics.”

Carll also received recognition when some of his songs were featured in the movie Country Strong, which starred Tim McGraw and Gweneth Paltrow.

A pre-show cookout begins at 6 p.m. including all-you-can-eat burgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, for $10. Tickets are limited and entrance from $15 to $18. More information can be found on the website or by phone at (740) 753-1924.
