International student sues Ohio University over stolen items

A Chinese international student is suing Ohio University after more than $2,000 worth of belongings was allegedly stolen from his dorm room in March.

Liu Shichen, 19, filed the lawsuit in the Ohio Court of Claims Thursday. The claims stem from an incident March 27 when Shichen was moving back after spring break into his Hoover Hall room, 135 S. Green Dr.

Shichen claims that the room was dirty and he told the resident assistant, who then called the cleaning staff to come to the room. Shichen was not present when the staff was cleaning his room and claims that the staff left the door unlocked when they left the room. When he returned his belongings had been stolen, according to court documents.

The stolen items include his passport, student visa, iphone, digital camera, a $129 jacket, a pair of $139 sunglasses and other items. Shichen included the cost of two round trips to the Chinese consulate in New York City into the cost of his student visa, making it $1,078.95.

He is asking the court to have OU pay him $2,497.49 in damages for the lost goods.

Neither the court nor OU has issued a response to the complaint.
