Posthumous work of local photographer featured at The Kennedy

Lloyd Moore spent the final years of his life in Athens County, but prior to his residency, had traveled the world with his camera and documenting what he saw.

Some of Moore’s never before seen work is on exhibit now at The Kennedy Museum. Lloyd Moore: Without Pretense is a tribute exhibition to the life and work of the artist. The exhibit displays pieces of Moore’s works, including scenes from his jail series, obituaries, his time in Korea and portraits of people from Lawrence County, Ohio.

Moore worked as a lawyer in Lawrence County and first used photography as a way to document his clients, developing his interest in photography.

Petra Kralickova, the exhibit’s curator, selected which pieces from Moore’s work to put in the exhibit.

“Moore has dozens and dozens of photos that were never developed,” she said. “That’s why we are so excited about this exhibition.”

Rajko Grlic, film professor, was the curator for Moore’s first exhibit at The Kennedy Museum in 2003 and helped him compile his photographs into a book.

Grlic said that in Moore’s work he sees not only the confidence of the photographer, but also truth in the eyes of his subjects.

The photographs in the exhibit were a gift to the museum nearly ten years ago, Kralickova said. But Moore’s death last December prompted the museum to bring his work out once more.

“We wanted to make a tribute to his life and his art,” she said.

The exhibit spans two different rooms, something the curators considered when selecting from Moore’s collection.

“You have to look at the space first and decide what things belong together,” Kralickova said. “Really what I was looking at was small groupings of Moore’s style and placing them together.”
