Athens bank robbery suspect at large

Police have yet to apprehend a man who used a written threat to make off with an undisclosed amount of money from an Athens bank yesterday.

At 12:44 p.m. yesterday, a white male in his 20s entered WesBanco, a banking center at 505 Richland Ave., and presented a written weapons threat to a bank teller, according to Athens Police Capt. Ralph Harvey.

Police say it is unclear if the suspect was actually armed. After robbing the bank, the man, who was wearing a black ball cap and dark flannel shirt, fled south on Richland and remains at large.

A neighboring multi-purpose building, 507 Richland Ave., was evacuated after a citizen reported a man matching the robber’s description inside, but the Ohio Highway Patrol K-9 unit was unable to find the suspect in or around the building.

APD, Ohio University Police Department, Athens County Sheriff’s Department and Ohio Highway Patrol all contributed to the investigation, which the APD is “continuing to pursue.”
