Athens County-themed NBC special wins Emmy

A Dateline NBC special featuring Athens County won an Emmy Award Monday for an exceptional news and documentary program concerning poverty in Southeast Ohio.

The special, “America Now: Friends and Neighbors,” won the award for Outstanding Continuing Coverage of a News Story in a News Magazine. The show originally aired July 15, 2010, on Dateline NBC and aired a followup Aug. 1, 2010.

The program focused on poverty in Athens County with Dateline following the lives of several county residents. The program also detailed the workings of the Friends and Neighbors Community Choice Food Center in Lottridge, Ohio, about 17 miles southeast of Athens.

The director of the Friends and Neighbors Community Choice Food Center, Lisa Roberts, was invited to the event in New York City Monday. She was featured in the program and was invited to accept the award along with the producers of the program.
