Athens dubbed one of best U.S. college towns

Athens' bars, fests, music scene and Halloween bash were recognized today in MSN's list of top college towns.

Of the eight towns listed, Athens was the only one in Ohio to make the cut.

"For the next nine months, sleepy towns like Athens (of Ohio and Georgia), Boone, N.C. and Bozeman, Mont., will double in population, shops will double their stocks of pennants and sweatshirts, and bars will roar like the football stadium from Thursday until (at least) Sunday," the article states.

MSN's article listed the Athens farmers market, alternative-energy sources and the haunted tales of The Ridges as draws for the town.

Athens' yearly Halloween block party also adds to the town's college feel, according to the article.

Athens was listed along with Bozeman, Mont., the home of Montana State University; Kalamazoo, Mich., home to both Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo College; and Peterborough, Ontario, home to Trent University.

Nine different cities were listed last year. They included Austin, Texas, home of the University of Texas; Berkeley, Calif., home to the University of California at Berkeley; Athens, Ga., home to the University of Georgia; and Boston, Mass., which holds more than 80 colleges and universities.
