Ben Franklin to visit OU Southern for Constitution Day

Founding Father Benjamin Franklin will be reincarnated on Ohio University’s Southern campus today.

Steve Nousen, a nationally known interpreter of the historic figure, will perform at 2 p.m. in the Mains Rotunda in the Rife Center in celebration of Constitution Day.

Although he was not primarily involved in writing the Constitution, “Franklin was the guy that brought everybody together,” said Dave Lucas, associate professor of communication studies at Ohio University Southern.

In the same manner that Franklin unified the writers of the Constitution, Lucas said he hopes this performance will attract many different classes from the university.

History, political science, communications and a public speaking class have already expressed interest in attending the performance, he said.

In addition, Ironton-area residents and students from several high schools will likely be in attendance, Lucas said.

“It should be an event that allows everyone to participate,” he said.

Constitution Day officially takes place on Sept. 17 but will be celebrated on Friday so more students can attend.

“I wanted the classes to be able to participate,” Lucas said.

Lucas emphasized the importance of studying the Constitution.

“A lot of the things we do in the United States are tied back to the Constitution,” he said. “It is sort of a living guide to running a republic.”
