Big Mama's appetite brings Chicago band to Athens

Geronimo!, a Chicago-based fuzz/indie/rock band, will tread the brick streets this Saturday after driving a 15-passenger bus from Chicago to Casa Cantina.

Making Athens the second stop of their tour, Geronimo! will perform exclusively from their forthcoming album, which will debut in early 2012, said Kelly Johnson, guitarist and vocalist.

“We're kind of progressing as artists still and as a band, and I think the new stuff showcases that,” Johnson said of the album.

Keyboardist Ben Grigg said free sample CDs will be distributed at the show. The CDs include a three-track preview of the new album.

Saturday’s event will mark Geronimo!’s third performance in Athens. Drummer Matt Schwerin credits Athens’s repeat booking to the college-age population and one very specific Court Street venue.

“Big Mamma’s. We’re a huge fan of that,” Johnson said. “It keeps us coming back. That’ll be my dinner Saturday night.”

Johnson said Geronimo! lends itself to a younger demographic and is often compared to Nirvana.

“Anything that’s from the ‘90s and distorted is something that comes our way,” Johnson said.
