Boxcar Burlesque presents a cheeky show

Tassels will be twirling at 7 p.m. tomorrow evening as the ladies of Boxcar Burlesque present their second annual burlesque and music festival, Hobo’s Holiday.

Soloist Dolly Derringer headlines the 10-member burlesque troupe, which displays the classic technique of performance strip tease. The troupe is joined by various musical guests and comedians, as well as a screening of Who Is Bozo Texino?

The show, which is Boxcar Burlesque’s largest yearly performance, draws its roots in burlesque, an art form popularized in the 1920s and 1930s.  There are many things to consider when designing the accurate portrayal of that “throwback style,” Derringer said.

“The artistic nature of the performance comes out in costuming and props and music choice,” she said. “Most of the dance moves of neo-burlesque performers are using today were taken from that original period.”

Derringer graduated from Ohio University in 2006 with a degree in commercial photography, but said she could not ignore her desire to bring the art of burlesque to Athens. She founded Boxcar Burlesque in 2009 after dancing solo for two years.

The event also will feature the theatrical comedy of Bohunk & Braincase and admission includes dinner and live tarot readings.

At-the-door admission is $20; pre-sale tickets are available at O’Betty’s for a discounted price of $15.
