Ohio University fraternity members went to town with a sledgehammer and a mangled car to show that when it comes to OU Greek life, Lambda Chi Alpha is different.
Members of the fraternity smashed a car on South Beach last night to raise awareness of their fraternity and philanthropy. They received the car free from McKee Auto Parts in New Marshfield
Lambda Chi Alpha supports Brothers Feeding Others; OU’s chapter specifically works with Christ the King Church in Athens, said Mark Ingram, a junior studying political science and Lambda Chi Alpha’s rush chair.
“We’re trying to get new guys and to show that we actually do give to charity,” Ingram said.
Fraternity members took turns taking swings at the car and invited passersby to do the same. Although they did not charge people to participate, the fraternity did receive $200 in donations for the event from Broney’s Alumni Grill and University Off-Campus Housing, said John Budosh, a senior studying health service administration and the fraternity’s president.
Lambda Chi Alpha plans to hold another car smashing in the spring to raise money for its philanthropy.
Members said this fraternity is different because it has diverse members and doesn’t refer to new recruits as “pledges.”
“We hope to get our name out there and show that we’re different from most Greek life,” Budosh said.
