High School Football: Area teams gear up for weekend games

Alexander

After starting the season 3-0, coach Sean Arno said the Spartans do not plan to deviate from what they have done in their prior three contests.

“We’re going to do things like we always do. You watch film, you break down what you want to do, you design what you want to do,” Arno said. “You want to focus on the team you’re playing but really the focus is on us.”

While the Spartans are aware of their upcoming opponent, Arno said the majority of their focus is on themselves.

“We’re not talking about Frontier, we’re talking about ourselves, we’re talking about us and that is the key to getting better,” Arno said.

Athens

A year after starting the season 0-3, the Athens Bulldogs have put the memory of last season in the past, and enter Friday’s game 3-0.

Despite a perfect record thus far, Athens coach Ryan Adams has warned his group to not take Chillicothe (0-3) lightly.

“On film, Chillicothe has a good defense. They have two of the better inside linebackers I’ve seen this year. They have a lot of team speed and athletes and run the triple option,” Adams said.

That being said, Adams and his crew have spent the week fine-tuning their already potent offense and adjusting their defense in anticipation of the option attack.

Nelsonville York

The Buckeyes look to make it two years in a row with a win against Columbus Bishop Ready (2-1.) They have outscored their opponents 133-18 in their three wins so far this season.

They handily defeated Berne Union last week by a score of 57-0, racking up nearly 500 yards of total offense in a very balanced offensive showing. Senior running back Dustin Young ran the show for the Buckeyes, totaling four touchdowns and over 200 yards on the ground.

Nelsonville York will look to implement a similar attack against the Silver Knights, who gave up 58 points in a loss to Licking Valley last week.

Trimble

The Tomcats are fresh off of their first win of the season, an 18-14 win over South Gallia on their home turf last week. Coach Phil Faires said he is looking for a more complete effort on both sides of the ball this week.

Trimble will face Coal Grove (1-2) on the road Friday.

“They’re a good team and will be content to not throw the ball,” Faires said.

“We are looking to see their quarterback outside the pocket and they are going to run it down our throats.”

Offensively, Faires said the Tomcats are going to look to establish more of a balanced attack in an attempt to put a bit less stress on Austin Keith and the running game.

“We’d like to mix it up,” Faires said. “I look for them to try to keep as many in the box as they can and go man-to-man on the receivers.”
