McDavis encourages reflection on Sept. 11 anniversary

As Ohio University and Athens prepare for the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, OU President Roderick McDavis urged students and employees to remember the millions affected by the attacks.

In a campuswide email, McDavis asked those on campus to recognize the first responders to the 9/11 attacks and all who have contributed since.

“As we pause, we pay tribute to the millions of individuals who have stepped forward in service since that day, caring for the hurt, lending a hand to devastated families, and serving in the armed forces around the world,” McDavis said in the email.

Faculty and students have planned several events for Sunday to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

The College Republicans will create a memorial on College Green with flags representing the victims of 9/11.

At noon, Student Senate will have a wreath-laying ceremony by the flags.

There will be a prayer service at 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of St. Paul's Catholic Church on the corner of North College and Mill streets.

There will be a march at 7 p.m. starting at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd on University Terrace and ending at the Islamic Center.

“For each of us, whether we choose to participate in the events on campus or engage in a more private remembrance, this weekend will be a time of somber reflection,” McDavis said in the email. “As you spend time with your friends and loved ones, I wish you peace.”
