Speaking Bobcats negotiate way to the top

Ohio University’s Forensics Speech and Debate Team, the Speaking Bobcats, nabbed third place in an Indianapolis tournament this weekend.

The “Forensics 500” speech tournament in Indianapolis set the Speaking Bobcats against 12 other teams.OU’s team had fewer members than some of the other teams, said Dan West, the John A. Cassese director of forensics.

“Our strategy was to play a smarter game,” West said. “The events we entered were perfected. They were well practiced and well rehearsed.”

Brett Martz, a junior studying communication, and Tyler Rife, a sophomore studying communication, helped with the Speaking Bobcats’ third-place finish.

“The time we spent preparing made all the difference,” said West, who is entering his seventh year in forensics at OU.

The Speaking Bobcats ended last year’s season in fifth place.

“Our main goal is to place higher than last year,” West said.

The Speaking Bobcats will also be competing in the Ohio Forensics Association Fall Workshop Sept. 17.
