Students welcomed with ice-cold treat

Several top administrators took time out of their day to welcome students passing through Baker University Center this afternoon.

Ohio University Dean of Students Ryan Lombardi and Vice President for Student Affairs Kent Smith donned rubber gloves to help scoop ice cream to celebrate the first week of classes.

“We like to interact with students in their environment,” Smith said.

They had a table on the third floor of Baker and beckoned students to it so Lombardi and Smith could encourage them to get involved.

“It’s a great way to meet and connect with students,” Lombardi said. “We love helping with events like this.”

The "How 2 Be a Bobcat" event included ice cream with green sprinkles to boost school spirit. There was also a raffle to give the students an opportunity to win OU apparel.

It was also a way to get the word out about the HOW2 series Baker is hosting every other Wednesday night, which will include various events to teach students how to make butterbeer or craft gourmet meals in their residence halls.

“This is the first of our HOW2 series that every student should take part in,” said Andrew Holzaepfel, the associate director of OU’s Campus Involvement Center.

Students were also excited to snag some free snacks.

“I haven’t heard of many colleges that have events like this,” said Ana Luttrell, a senior. “There is always something fun going on”

“I follow Lombardi on Twitter, and that’s where I heard about the free ice cream,” senior Diana Pickett said. “It’s so cool that they are really involved."

Lombardi, who uses his @OUDean Twitter account to interact with students, has amassed almost 2,800 followers.

Some students who attended the event said it is a great idea that OU employees reach out to students.

“It’s cool that our administrators spend time with students,” said OU student Will McFarland, another satisfied ice cream customer.
