Study-abroad options broadening

Students who were concerned that Peru and Thailand were missing from Ohio University’s study-abroad list will be able to participate in programs in those countries starting this fall.

The Office of Education Abroad has teamed up with the International Education Programs to offer more study-abroad options and locations to OU students.

Starting this fall, programs to Australia, China, Costa Rica, Ecuador, England, France, Italy, New Zealand, Peru, South Africa, Spain, Thailand and Turkey will be added OU’s study-abroad programs list.

OU students who have studied abroad in the past said visiting another country through one of OU’s programs provides perspective that can’t be found in Ohio.

"The benefits studying abroad in one semester don't even compare to the benefits to a semester here,” said Gina Mussio, a junior studying journalism. “Studying abroad helps you realize that there is more than Athens, Ohio."

In addition to giving students more geographic locations to choose from, the partnership will offer more programs tailored to their individual goals. The collaboration could also lead to additional scholarships that will make studying abroad more affordable, said Catherine Marshall, director of the Office of Education Abroad.

Marshall said students will receive “more access and opportunity” to study-abroad options with the help of International Education Programs and Kari Beall, a full-time IEP adviser who works out of OU’s Walter International Education Center.

“The Office of Education Abroad is very excited about our new collaboration with IEP and the expanded opportunities it offers our students,” Marshall said in a news release.

OEA and IEP will host "Study Abroad 101" sessions from 5-6 p.m. every Tuesday in the Walter International Education Center. The presentations will include a Q-and-A period and outline study-abroad options available and show students how to start looking for study-abroad programs.
